How to Choose Carbon Fiber Plate Thickness for Lightweight Builds

A practical guide to matching carbon fiber plate thickness with stiffness, weight, mounting, and project use case.
Start with the application
Carbon fiber plate thickness should be selected from the job the part needs to do. A decorative panel, a drone arm, and a structural bracket do not need the same thickness.
Balance stiffness and weight
Thicker plates normally improve rigidity, but they also add weight and may be harder to fit into compact assemblies. For FPV and robotics projects, stiffness-to-weight balance matters more than choosing the thickest option.
Check mounting points
Holes, standoffs, screws, and unsupported spans all affect how the plate behaves. When possible, review the drawing and loading direction before ordering custom parts.
